Our work focuses on addressing the challenge of landslides in the Himalayan region, particularly in Uttarakhand, India. We have developed a comprehensive framework for a Territorial Landslide Early Warning System (Te-LEWS) that takes into account the unique terrain conditions of the area. Unlike traditional systems that rely solely on rainfall thresholds, we have introduced a Soil Water Index (SWI) threshold.
To determine the critical SWI threshold, we conducted an analysis of historical landslide occurrences alongside satellite-derived rainfall intensities. This approach not only enhances the accuracy of early warnings but also contributes to a deeper understanding of landslide dynamics in this region.
One of our key contributions is the user-friendly webGIS interface we've created. This interface enables users to upload shape files of specific regions, allowing them to visualize and analyze SWI data effectively. By integrating SWI calculations into the framework and providing this accessible tool, we aim to empower users to assess potential landslide risks in their chosen areas, ultimately contributing to more informed decision-making and enhanced disaster preparedness.
